Chapter 21: Padawan
We read this chapter aloud and had a conversation about Jack Will and August... we looked specifically at Jack Will and August's conversation on p.64 and considered how honest and genuine they were with each other.
Chapter 24: Mr. Browne's October Precept
1). On p.65, read August's interpretation of Mr. Browne's October Precept "Your Deeds Are Your Monuments." Do you agree with what August wrote? Why or why not?
Chapter 25: Apples
1). On p.66, August tells his mom that he has to "invite everyone because I don't want anyone to get their feelings hurt if they find out other people are invited and they aren't, okay?" What does this tell us about August? How does this connect to how August views birthdays?
2). Why do you think certain people didn't show up to the birthday? Do you believe the excuses that they gave?
3). August describes his birthday as "fun because all the grown-ups ended up bowling in the lane next to ours, so it really felt like there were a lot of people there to celebrate my birthday" (67). Why would it be important to August to have it seem like a lot of people were there?
1). Why does August act like he is mad with his mom? Is he mad at her or mad at something else? What would he be mad or upset about?
Chapter 22: Wake Me Up when September Ends
1). Consider August's reflections on his peers, on page 62:
"They were just being normal dumb kids. I know that. I kind of wanted to tell them that. Like, it's okay, I know I'm weird-looking, take a look, I don't bite. Hey, the truth is, if a Wookiee started going to the school all of a sudden, I'd be curious, I'd probably stare a bit! And If I was walking with Jack or Summer, I'd probably whisper to them: Hey, there's the Wookiee. And if the Wookiee caught me saying that, he'd know I wasn't trying to be mean. I was just pointing out the fact that he's a Wookiee" (62).
What do August's comments tell us about August's understanding of his peers?
