Part Three: Summer, pp.119-132

Chapter 48: Weird Kids

In this section of the book, we get to see things through Summer's perspective. She talks about how kids have reacted to her sitting with August at lunch:

"Who knew that my sitting with August Pullman at lunch would be such a big deal? People acted like it was the strangest thing in the world. It's weird how weird kids can be." (119).

Why do Summer's classmates care?

Chapter 49: The Plague

On page 120, Summer writes "I do admit August's face takes some getting used to. I've been sitting with him for two weeks now, and let's just say he's not the neatest eater in the world. But other than that, he's pretty nice. I should also say that I don't really feel sorry for him anymore."

Why does Summer not feel sorry for August anymore? Is this a positive thing or a negative thing?

Think about peer pressure and what peer pressure means. Discuss examples of peer pressure that we see in the classroom, on sports teams, out at recess, etc. With this in mind, discuss ways in which peer pressure presents itself in Summer's section. In this chapter, 'The Plague,' Summer talks to her friend Maya about the cheese touch:

"I was like, 'What's the Plague?' And she told me. I told Maya I thought that was really dumb and she agreed, but she still wouldn't touch a ball that August just touched, not if she could help it."

If Maya thinks the idea of the Plague is dumb, then why does she continue to play along? Do you think Maya represents the opinion and mindset of August's classmates? Why are they choosing to play this game?

Chapter 50: The Halloween Party

This is a great chapter that reveals more about Summer's character. I enjoy reading this chapter aloud with the students and having a discussion with the kids about why Summer chooses to sneak out of Savanna's party.

Would most kids do what Summer did? What does this tell us about Summer?

Chapter 52: This Kid is Rated R

On p.128, August discusses his grandmother with Summer:
" 'Have you ever known anyone who died?' I asked.
' Just my grandmother, and I don't really even remember her.'"

Compare August's relationship with his grandmother to Via's. How are they alike or different?

On p.129, Summer describes August as being "such a good sport about himself." What does this mean?
