Chapters 42-47 pp.103-117

These first two chapters involve a lot of scientific words and can be quite confusing, which is why I find it helpful to read aloud these two chapters to the class.

Chapter 42: Genetics 101

What does the idiom "two peas in a pod" mean?

Chapter 43: The Punnett Square

At the end of Chapter 43, on p.106, Via says "There are countless people under words like "germline mosaicism." "chromosome rearrangement," or "delayed mutation." Countless babies who will never be born, like mine."

What does this tell us about Via and what she's been witness to with August? Does she want to have kids? Why or why not?

Chapter 44: Out with the Old

Vocabulary
diverse
spite

Chapter 45: October 31

We have been looking at the reading strategy of comparing/contrasting and this chapter allows for a great conversation to compare and contrast Via's Halloween day from August's Halloween day.

On p.109, Via talks about her mom working on August's Boba Fett costume: "I would say, in all, she must have spent two weeks working on the stupid costume. And no, I won't mention the fact that Mom has never made any of my costumes, because it really has no bearing on anything at all."
Why does Via choose to mention this to the reader? What does this tell us about her and her role in the family?

When August comes home from school on Halloween day, Via loses out on her mother-daughter bonding time. Via understands that August is need of his mother, but do you think Via's mom is aware of how she drops everything to help August?

Chapter 46: Trick or Treat

Vocabulary
giddy
trouper
nausea
bribed

Chapter 47: Time to Think

Consider what Via says to August about being normal on p.115. Do you think August really wants to be ‘normal’? Why, or why not?

What does Via say that convinces August to go back to school?
